Y5 Owls

Hello and welcome to year 5, Owl class. My name is Miss Berrington and here you will find all sorts of information about our class and what we will be getting up to this Autumn...

My major passions in life, becides my two boys, are teaching and Vinyl. If there is ever an opportunity to sing in class to promote and engage learning, I'll do it! laugh I am also a huge Derby County fan, so let's see how they do this season...

We are really lucky to have Mrs Bird with us this year...she will teach Owl class on a Tuesday. She is an exceptional scientist and specialist Spanish...ist... winkheart

If you wish to contact me, please do so via class dojo. yes

23.04.21: I can't quite believe we are in the summer term! We have begun our local history topic this week- please ask your children what they have found out about Long Eaton! We have also written letters to our new partner class- Penguins!!!

19.03.21: The children have settled well into our second week of school. Mrs Bird had such a great time in science...she even tweeted about it! yes

Well done to Giulia who received a REACH certificate this week, you deserve it lovely lady!

12.03.21: It is SO Good to be back together again. It has been a lovely week! We have very quickly got back into the swing of things. Have a great weekend. (I'm not going to mention DCFC at the moment...)

18.12.20:  What a fantastic term! All the children deserve a well earned rest...we are looking forward to coming back and starting our new topic: Romans and Volcanoes. Have a very MERRRY CHRISTMAS!!

27.11.20: We finished The Lion and The Unicorn this week...the children have really enjoyed the story and have produced some fantastic, well thought out pieces. Today it was children's choice, so I've had the pleasure of reading diaries, descriptions and conversations...

Well done to Amelie and Rowan who both received a REACH award this week!smiley

20.1.20: It has been Anti-bullying week this week and the children have done a fantastic job talking about how we should look after one another and treat each other with respect. The children made a pledge of kindness and created a positive message heart. I'm very proud to have a class that embraces this message.

Congratulations to Isaac for his REACH award....laugh

13.11.20: Its been another fab week. We are really getting our teeth into the WW2 topic  and I cant wait to teach the next lesson! The children completed their HOT writes today- the biography of Anne Frank and I must say, what a Stirling job they have done. VERY IMPRESSED.

A huge well done to Madison who received today's REACH nomination. yes

06.11.20: We have had a brilliant first week back. We kicked off our WW2 topic in style by drawing our own time lines and sharing the projects set for homework. We have already started putting the work on display. The children have shown great enthusiasm and I can't wait to teach the rest of the topic. The knowledge they shared this week was well researched and paved the way for our learning. Well done Owl Classsmiley

22.10.20: What a fantastic end to the first half term. Your children have worked their socks off this week. They have shown me a brilliantly positive attitude and a steely determination to improve. Well done to Mila who received this week's REACH certificate- what a super scientist she is. A special mention needs to go to Isaac, Matthew and Harley for their beautiful Zentangle artwork- well done!

COYR: We CAN beat Forest.....yes

16.10.20: The children have completed some beautiful Black History Month posters this week- well done Owls!!! Congratulations to Lily and Oliver who have received REACH certificates today, you are shining examples for our school. Also, a little mention to Madison and Tamara for having their English and maths work placed in the Secret Work folders today...

Let's hope we beat Watford tonight!

09.10.20: We have had a very hard working week... the year 5 Reading Week has been a huge success, with all the children practising their reading skills and building their confidence. I'm especially pleased with the children's writing this week. They wrote their own versions of chapter 1 for Alice in Wonderland- they really rose to the challenge. I would like to give Mila a special mention for her writing skills today. We had lots of fun today, taking part in our inter school competition- trying to hit the target and using balloons...

Finally...a nice win for the RAMS!!

02.10.20: It has been another fab week, your children have been working hard. We have been polishing our telling the time skills and writing some amazing descriptive sentences this week. The children's footwork in dance has hugely improved this week, we have a few little twinkle toes in our midst... Congratulations to Amy who has received this week's REACH certificate. TOP job to you!smiley

25.09.20: What a hardworking week we have had- and one of celebration! The children have had a brilliant time with their times tables this week, lots of merits awarded...the same can be said for spellings! A big well done to Emmie for receiving the LAB COAT OF HONOUR from Mrs Bird in Science this week. Lastly, a super well done to Elliott for receiving this week's REACH award...super job. yes

Let's hope Derby give us reason to celebrate after Blackburn this weekend...surprise

18.09.20: It has been a cracking first two weeks. The children have settled back into school life really well! They have made it very difficult for me to choose someone for a REACH certificate this week... I am most impressed with their efforts in their first spelling test of the year...they earned themselves 5 minutes extra break on Monday! We have begun our tag rugby sessions, and I must say, what a sporty lot they are.

Have a great weekend, I think the weather forecast is pretty good. Let's not mention Derby's last few performances...crying

04.09.20 : Hi folks, its been a lovely 2 days back in school. Your children have adapted to life back in the classroom really well. Miss Barrett and myself are really proud of them all. I am looking forward to next week already! I have given the children their new planners with a class dojo letter for details on how to join. I will ask the children to write the date for our class assembly in them on Monday.

Have a TOP weekend. I'll try not to cry too much about Chris Martin...sad

Homework will be set on a weekly basis. It usually alternates between a mathematics activity, mymaths for example, and an English activity, spag.com for example. Sometimes we may set a paper based activity, which we will give plenty of notice for. If you need a computer based activity printing out, please let me know via dojo and I can do that for you.

We expect ALL children, EVERY week to learn their spellings in preparation for their weekly test. Times tables MUST be learnt and time spent on TT rock stars is a must.

Finally, we encourage children to read as much as possible at home, both to themselves and to their parents. Reading at home is vital to compliment and reinforce what we are doing in school.
