Welcome to Aurora Class!
Welcome to our lovely Year 6 class named after the Aurora Borealis. Each of our classes in school this year after a space theme. We were even lucky enough to witness our class name in action when the Northern Lights paid the UK a visit.
Mr McCarthy is our class teacher and we are supported in the classroom by Mrs Read, Mrs Remon and Mrs Styring. We're lucky enough to have Mrs Moult as our midday supervisor too. We feel very lucky to spend your final year of primary School with you and do all we can to make it the best one yet!
Our learning - Spring 2
English - Much of our English work this half term will be based around our class novel: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. In addition to this, we will be writing biographies, developing our reading comprehension skills and deepening our understanding the spelling and grammar rules for year six.
Maths - To start the half term, we will be extending work from before half term on algebra and linking this to problem solving activities. After this, our focus will be geometry: learning to use protractors to enable us to measure and draw angles and triangles, followed by calculating missing angles in a variety of shapes. In addition to this we will be continue to develop our arithmetic skills.
Science - Evolution and Inheritance.
RE - Is it better to express your religion through art and architecture or through charity and generosity?
PSCHE - Being safe.
History - The Industrial Revolution.
Art - Lowry -drawing and painting.
Computing - Introduction to spreadsheets, plus online safety every Wednesday in our Project Evolve sessions.
Spanish - At the weekend.
PE - Thursday - outdoor PE (Tennis). Fridays - indoor PE (Badminton).
Homework.
15.11.24 - 4 x 2 digit multiplication. Children only need to complete the first 12 questions. I have put the document as an electronic version in the homework documents section below. The document includes the answers on the third page. Children should mark their answers every few questions to see if they are on track or spot their mistakes to avoid making them in the questions that follow.
04.10.24 SPAG.COM - Subordinate Clauses and Conjunctions. This builds on learning we have done over the first few weeks of the school year. If time allows, children could also write some sentences with subordinate clauses in remembering the punctuation! Logins available from class teachers if needed.
20.09 My Maths - Place Value This will consolidate what we have been learning in our maths lessons this week.
Homework will be set weekly on a Friday. It will then need to be in school the following Friday or before.
A piece or English or maths will be set each week. It maybe a paper based task or an online activity.
Reading - Children are expected to read 3 times a week either to an adult or to themselves. This needs to be recorded in the children's planners. Planners and reading books need to be in school every day. Children will be rewarded for reading three times each week with merits and entry into the reading raffle.
Times tables - These are vital to progress in maths. Children are expected to practice tables using TT Rockstars at home regularly.
Spellings - These are set each Friday and then tested the following Friday. Again, these are vital to children's progress in English and in improving their vocabulary and quality of their writing.
Spellings.
All children will be given a copy of this overview in the first week of term. It will be stuck into their planners.
