This year, our classes are named after key historical figures, linked to the history knowledge blocks that we will be working on in year 6. During the year we will be studying the Industrial Revolution and a key figure, local to where we live, is Richard Arkwright.
Sir Richard Arkwright (23 December 1732 – 3 August 1792) was an English inventor and a leading entrepreneur during the early Industrial Revolution.
He developed a spinning frame that used water power that enabled him to create an engine involved in 'carding' - to change raw cotton into 'cotton lap' before it was spun. He was the first person to develop factories that combined water power, machinery, semi-skilled labour and 'lap', to create mass produced yarn. As a result of this, he became known as 'Father of the modern industrial factory system'. His work and factories can be seen at Cromford in Derbyshire, now preserved as part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
