Welcome to Year 6 - Puffin Class

Puffins are famously hard-working and resilient and as we step into the final year at primary school, our classroom is a place where we 'fly' high and always do our best!

The teaching team this year comprises of:  Mrs Kelly, Mrs Read, Mrs Ashton and Miss Austen. 

We are excited to work with you all and hope to create lots of wonderful memories in what is your final year at primary school!

Autumn 2 - Our learning.

English – We will begin this half-term focussing on Remembrance Poetry and diary writing. This will see us continuing to develop our use of figurative language and the ability to describe scenes and emotions to engage the reader.  We will continue to use Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.  We will continue our work on extending the children's understanding of spelling and grammar alongside their reading comprehension skills.  

Maths –  We will start this half-term by learning about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. We will explore how to multiply fractions by fractions and divide fractions by integers. We will also look at the four operations with decimals.    We will also develop our times table knowledge and understanding of mental arithmetic further. We will also continue to develop our oracy skills through describing our thought processes when solving mathematical problems.

Geography – This half-term we will be studying rivers; starting with recapping the water cycle: drawing and explaining this. We will identify the features of a river and describe how the landscape around the river changes from the source to the mouth. We will develop our understanding of the impact of droughts linked to climate change.

Computing – This half-term we will be answering the question: 'What makes a good website?' We will be evaluating different websites and creating our own.

RE - This half-term's focus is 'What is it like for a Muslim living in Britain today?'  We will be applying our knowledge of the 5 Pillars of Islam to how these benefit Muslims, their families, communities and Britain.  We will also investigate the Qur'an: learning about how it was revealed and how it is treated, learnt and studied.

Science – This half-term sees us investigating light. We will be exploring how we see and how light travels. Alongside finding out about reflections and the spectrum of colour, we will be learning about shadows.

PSHCE –  This half-term sees us addressing puberty, relationships and reproduction. We will be investigating what happens during puberty and reproduction, alongside exploring healthy relationships and communication.  In addition to this, we will look at families, conception and pregnancy as well as consent and respect in relationships and online.

Spanish – Our focus this half-term is 'El Colegio', where we will extend our understanding of the Spanish school day including lessons and the times they happen. We will also develop our understanding of determiners in Spanish and express how we feel about different Spanish subjects – giving reasons for our preferences.

DT –This half-term we will be learning about nutrition and safety in the kitchen.  These are vital to the other aspects of our learning, as we will be preparing and cooking a meal of our choice.

PE – Wednesdays and Fridays are our PE sessions for this half-term. Indoor PE (floor gymnastics) on Tuesday and outdoor PE (Hockey).

Homework.

Homework will be set weekly on a Friday. It will then need to be completed and in school the following Friday or before.

A piece of English or maths will be set each week. It may be a paper-based task or an online activity. Paper-based activities will be stuck in homework books. Children will be given login details for online tasks.

Reading – Children are expected to read 3 times a week either to an adult or to themselves.  This needs to be recorded in the children's planners. Planners and reading books need to be in school every day.  Children will be rewarded for reading three times each week with merits and entry into the reading raffle.

Timetables – These are vital to progress in maths.  Children are expected to practice tables using TT Rock stars at home regularly.

Spellings – These are set each Friday and then tested the following Friday. Again, these are vital to children's progress in English and in improving their vocabulary and quality of their writing.

All children will be given a copy of this overview in the first full week of term. It will be stuck in their planners.

Some children will be given personalised spellings in the first full week back.
