Year 5: Miss Berrington & Miss Vaughan - Giant Pandas

Welcome to year 5 everyone! Panda class will have two teachers this year, Miss Berrington and Miss Vaughan. Miss Berrington will be in class at the beginning of the week and Miss Vaughan will round off the week.

Please feel free to contact us via dojo or email. (Dojo is often quicker.)

Miss B would like to think herself as a bit of a music expert...he he he. I love music and collect vinyl so any opportunity we get to sing in class- we will. I am also a huge DCFC fan and like to catch up with the football news on a Monday morning. (We won't mention that we are still in league one.) My favourite subjects to teach are history and English. My mantra for our class will be: Your best is always good enough!

E mail address update everyone:    lberrington@dovedale.derbyshire.sch.uk

Just like Miss B, I love music. Unlike her, I cannot sing - so fortunately for everyone, I rarely grace the children with my voice in class! I am Welsh and love returning to green grass and mountains, so I spend most of my holidays in rainy Merthyr Tydfil . I really enjoy teaching Science, Spanish and DT and am lucky enough to take the children swimming this year, which is a real highlight for me. I am really looking forward to getting to know all the members of Giant Panda class, and can be reached on class dojo or at

08.09.23: WOW, what an incredible first week. The children have amazed us with their mature attitude and work ethic. We have both had a great week with the children, and we must say- the exploding volcanoes were a highlight!!

27.10.23: Well hello everyone. Sorry its been so long! Had a spot of bother! The children have had an incredible few weeks. One of the highlights has been their poetry writing. We have entered a national competition for young writers...so fingers crossed. We can't wait to share some of the learning we have been doing in class with you during our class assembly after half term. Have a wonderful break....the children have worked so hard, they deserve a rest. yes

10.11.23: What a cracking class assembly...weren't the children fab! It's been a very hard working, dedicated week- we would like to say thank you to the children for doing their best ALL the time. A huge well done to all the children who entered the poetry competition, they definitely earned their stickers, bookmarks and certificates. Watch this space...

17.11.23: WOW, the children look fabulous in the Pudsey gear. Thank you so much for your support. 06.01.24: A very HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all! We had such a busy end of term the children worked their socks off right until party day. We can't wait to get started on Monday. laugh

Not only have the children overcome some challenges in swimming, they have completed some high quality work, kept up their lovely chipper attitudes and completed their DT race cars! They have continued to up their game with presentation and have taken such pride in their work, especially in English, Science and Geography. Please keep up this fantastic work ethic for the rest of the spring folks. yes

Watch this space for an update on when our Summer 1 PE slots will be. We will send you a dojo as soon as we know as well folks.

Tai chi last half term was a huge success. Well done everyone, the whole class really embraced it. A super well done to Sahil, who received recognition for his effort and dedication from the master himself.

We will communicate with you via dojo about any changes or updates. smiley

Homework will be set on a weekly basis. It usually alternates between a mathematics activity, mymaths for example, and an English activity, spag.com for example. Sometimes we may set a paper based activity, which we will give plenty of notice for. If you need a computer based activity printing out, please let me know via dojo and we can do that for you.

We expect ALL children, EVERY week to learn their spellings in preparation for their weekly test. Times tables MUST be learnt and time spent on TT rock stars is a must.

Finally, we encourage children to read as much as possible at home, both to themselves and to their parents. Reading at home is vital to compliment and reinforce what we are doing in school. We reward children with merits for 3 reads a week. yes

We will set the spellings on spelling shed each week. There will be occasions when children choose words from the year 5 /6 list whereby spellings will not be put online to learn. We expect spellings to be learnt, although it doesn't have to be on Spelling Shed. We always aim for the whole class to achieve full marks- we love to celebrate when we do!
