To use greater than and less than symbols.
Ask your child which number is greater out of 6 and 10. Elicit that this is 10. Repeat for a few examples with numbers under 20 e.g. 8 and 16, 5 and 19. We can show which number is greater than or less than using words but another way to do it is using symbols. Your child will have already come across different symbols in maths e.g. + - and =.
Introdcuce them to the greater than > and less than < symbols. We can use these to show which number is greater than or less than a given number.
They look a little bit like a crocodile's mouth open wide. Explain to your child that crocodile's are greedy and always like to eat the biggest number. Pretend the numbers are like chocolate - the crocodile likes to eat the most.
Show your child the example below...
8 > 4
Can they see that 8 is the greater number so the crocodile's mouth is gobbling it up.
Choose an activity for your child depending on their confidence. Ask them to write the numbers out into their book and add a greater than or less than sign to show which number is the greatest.
1 star - numbers to 10
2 star - numbers to 20 with a challenge above 20 at the end
3 star - numbers below 100 with a challenge to use their own numbers at the end to complete the number sentence.
To identify and name a variety of everyday materials.
Ask your child to name as many different materials as they can think of (e.g. wood, plastic, metal, glass, brick etc).
Ask your child to name as many different ways to describe materials as they can think of (e.g. hard, soft, rough, shiny, bumpy etc).
Ask your child to take some post it notes around the house with materials written on them and go around and stick them to objects that are made from that material. E.g. your child could stick a post it note saying wood on a wooden chair.
Draw a quick table into your child's home learning book with the following titles. Ask them to write down objects that they find around the house into the table with the material it is made from and the property of that material (how they would describe what it is like).
