Italy class

Welcome to our class page!

We are a Year 2 class and our teachers are Mrs Potter (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday morning) and Mrs Tomlinson (Thursday afternoon, Friday). We also have Miss Young who is training to be a teacher.

Messages from Mrs Potter and Mrs Tomlinson

It has been a lovely start to the second half of our Autumn term and children have returned with lots of holiday news and are ready to learn!

This half term we continue with our 'Time Machine' topic, with our Italy class Time Machine whizzing back to 1605 this week to learn about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.  Over the next few weeks we will move on to the Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys and will end the term with reflections on the Christmas Story.

In Maths we are learning about bar models and how they can be used to represent number sentences.  We are also focusing on the inverse relationships of addition and subtraction.

We will very shortly begin out Christmas Concert rehearsals and your child will receive song words and possibly some lines to practise at home, if they have chosen a speaking part.  Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any queries about anything.  We can see many of you have signed up to Class Dojo already - thank you.  For more detailed messages, please email:

Please copy both of us in to ensure a quicker reply. Of course, you can also catch us at the end of the day for a chat about any concern or query.

Many thanks for your support,

Mrs Potter & Mrs Tomlinson

Our topic this term is:

Who will we meet in our Time Machine?

Our topic will begin with learning about our local history and researching into familiar places such as West Park and other Long Eaton locations.  We will then focus on significant historical people and events, including Florence Nightingale, Roald Dahl, Samuel Pepys, the Moon Landing, the Gunpowder Plot and the Great Fire of London.  Our topics will be woven throughout our literacy, history and geography work, and will also link to our maths and science where possible.

Our class book is:

Tilly and the Time Machine

by Adrian Edmondson

Tilly is seven and a half, and is about to make history!

When Tilly's dad builds a time machine in the shed, there's only

one place she really wants to go - back to her sixth birthday party.

But then something goes wrong! Tilly's dad gets stuck in the past and

only she can save him... Will they make it back in time for tea?

Useful information about our timetable:

We do PE on Monday (indoor) and Fridays (outdoor).

Spelling tests are on Wednesday.

Look at what we have been doing:

We have been learning about Apollo 11 and in DT we are making our own rockets.  In science we made our own 'rocket explosion' by adding some mints to Coca-Cola.  We loved the result!

We had a lovely trip to West Park, where we took time to  think about how the park has developed over time.  We would love to share our West Park facts with you at home - ask us! We are experts!

Our classroom is full of wonderful time-machines that are ready to zoom back into the past or into the future!  We loved showing and talking about our creations.
