Italy class

Welcome to our class page!

We are a Year 2 class and our teachers are Mrs Potter (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday morning) and Mrs Tomlinson (Thursday afternoon, Friday). For most of the Spring term, our student teacher Miss Young will be working at a different school, and we will have Miss Johnson with us.

Messages from Mrs Potter and Mrs Tomlinson

We have had a great start to our Spring term.  The children are really enjoying our new topic, based around the book 'The Moonshine Dragon' by Cornelia Funke.  In literacy children have been using the book for reading comprehension and are developing their story-writing skills.  In history and geography they have been learning about the legend of St. George and the Dragon, and have also been learning about castles including their features and the people who lived in them.

We have seen some amazing homework creations: models, drawings, pictures amongst other things.  Thank you very much for your support with this over the holidays, the children clearly enjoyed the activity and began our new term already armed with lots of castle facts!

As well as this, the children have also been busy preparing for our special Chinese New Year event which takes place on Thursday 24th January. They are learning a traditional Chinese song about the highly regarded Jasmine flower, and have also created lots of Chinese artwork and crafts.  We are looking forward to putting these on display on Friday 25th at Long Eaton town hall.  We hope that many of you will be able to join us for both the performance after school on Thursday and also have the opportunity to visit the display.  If you need a copy of the letter with further details of these events please ask.

Please look out for a letter coming home this week about SPAG.com.  This is an online resource that we will be using as a homework activity, focussing on spelling, punctuation and grammar.  Homework activities will be set every 2 weeks (alternating with My Maths) and we will send a dojo message advising you of the task set.  As with My Maths, we are more than happy to send home paper copies if you are unable to access this online.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any queries about anything.  Class Dojo can be used for short messages, and for more detailed messages, please email:

jpotter@dovedale.derbyshire.sch.uk

ltomlinson@dovedale.derbyshire.sch.uk

Please copy both of us in to ensure a quicker reply. Of course, you can also catch us at the end of the day for a chat about any concern or query.

Many thanks for your support,

Mrs Potter & Mrs Tomlinson

Our topic this term is:

What can the Moon bring to life?

This term our topic is focused around our class book, The Moonshine Dragon by Cornelia Funke.  In literacy children will be developing story-writing skills to retell the text including a range of writing features.  In history and geography we will be learning about castles, including when and where they were built, who lived in them and the features and functions of castles.  The children will also be learning about the legend of St George and the Dragon.

Our class book is:

The Moonshine Dragon

by Cornelia Funke

Patrick is trying to get to sleep, but the silvery moonlight coming in

through his bedroom curtains is keeping him awake.

Suddenly he hears a rustling noise and notices the pages of his

Dragons and Castles book move, as if an invisible hand was

turning them...

Patrick finds himself in a world of dragons and knights and becomes

part of a thrilling adventure, thanks to Moonlight Magic!

Look at what we have been doing:

We have loved Ling Peng's visits.  We have learnt a lot about Chinese New Year and have loved listening to her traditional Chinese stories and music.  We are very excited about our Chinese New Year performance and exhibition!

Look at our wonderful homework creations!

We had a lovely visit to St Mary's Church for 'The Real Christmas'.  Thank you to all of the volunteers at St Mary's and all parents who were able to help with the trip.

We have been learning about Apollo 11 and in DT we are making our own rockets.  In science we made our own 'rocket explosion' by adding some mints to Coca-Cola.  We loved the result!

We had a lovely trip to West Park, where we took time to  think about how the park has developed over time.  We would love to share our West Park facts with you at home - ask us! We are experts!

Our classroom is full of wonderful time-machines that are ready to zoom back into the past or into the future!  We loved showing and talking about our creations.
