Each week, usually on a Friday, you will find an update about our weeks learning and adventures! Within this class blog I will summarise what we have been up to in our lessons, inform you of any WOW moments from the week and also remind you of any useful information, whether this be homework or dates. This information will also be posted on dojo so if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me via dojo or email.
Friday 8th October 2021
Another fantastic week in Elphinstone class and we are all super happy to only have one more day until we are back to a full class! This term your children have gone above and beyond in supporting one another and have shown just how truly resilient and adaptable they really are.
This week has been a firm favourite for us all with many highlights. Some of these included a whole afternoon dedicated to Art. We focused on how colour can add texture and effect to our outwork by creating a shaded version of Van Gogh's painting 'The Starry Night' as well as a painted version. Photos will be uploaded shortly on to dojo.
A few reminders:
- Please can planners and reading books be in school every day. When you read with your child at home please sign their diary by ticking the rewards section and signing your name. We are edging closer to the end of the half term to find out who our reading raffle prize winner is!
- Spelling rule for next week focuses on our Year 3 challenge words which means there is no set rule. Engage with spelling lists on Spelling Shed.
- Homework this week is an online task on My Maths. Children's individual logins are in the back of their diaries.
Saturday 2nd October 2021
Here is the Friday update that I forgot to post due to packing away the harvest festival donations! We managed to collect almost half a ton of food to donate to the local community which is so impressive! Thank you.
Elphinstone class have had a fantastic week in school despite the rainy weather. In our English lessons we have begun looking at descriptions to help us create detailed story openers. In maths we have consolidated learning on number and place value to bridge the gaps. This is something we will continue to work on throughout our daily starters. Our afternoons have been fun too, continuing with hockey, working on our drawing and painting skills and exploring the use of magnets.
It was amazing to have the majority of the class back together on Thursday, although we are still missing a few! For those children who have remained clear from covid, please can we request that you test your child daily with a lateral flow as we have had a few further positive cases in Year 3 so the cycle is beginning again. For those who have already had covid we recommend avoiding lateral flowing your child in line with government guidance. I’m sure you can agree this isn’t the start to the year we had imagined but the resilience of the children and the support from parents/carers has made this easier.
Homework this week is the usual 3x weekly reads, the new spelling list and an activity on spag.com. Please engage with these weekly as they are set to consolidate your child’s learning in school and help us identify where further support is required.
Next week is mental health week and we will be focusing on our own and others mental health throughout daily assemblies as well as within planned lesson. On Friday 8th October it is 'Hello Yellow' World Mental Health Day. Children can come wearing any yellow clothing you may have to raise awareness of Mental Health.
For those children who brought a mental health ambassador letter home last week and would like to apply for a position; please can this be returned for Monday morning. Miss Gunnell kindly extended the deadline for Y3. For those children who have been off I will complete this with them at school should they wish to complete it.
Enjoy the rest of your day 😊

Firstly, we want to finish this week by saying a huge thank you to each and every one of you for your continued support. We appreciate the start to the week was slightly disruptive, but your quick response enabled us to continue our week successfully!
We have had a busy week in school, continuing our learning around recounts in English and beginning to progress to numbers to 1000 in Maths. We have witnessed some great resilience from both the learners in school as those who are currently self-isolating! This week you have proved that if you haven’t grasped something first time round then it is important to keep trying and you’ll get there in the end!
Our afternoons have been filled with fun too. We have taken part in another lesson of hockey with Beeston Hockey Club, mastered some brilliant floor routines in gymnastics and began an investigation into how different surfaces affect friction.
A few reminders:
- Spelling rule for next week focuses on ‘i’ sound spelt ‘y’. Engage with spelling lists on Spelling Shed.
- Homework this week is an online battle on TTRS - come on Elphinstone class!!
- Wednesday 29th September next week is our Harvest Festival themed day. Please come dressed as a fruit/vegetable or in autumnal colours. We are requesting that children bring donations of foods to be donated to the local community.

Another week complete in year 3 and as always a very busy but fun learning journey. This week I have been most impressed by the children's ability to adjust to junior life expectations. We are now noticing the children settling down quicker, focusing more in lessons and avoiding the distractions of conversations at tables to ensure they are concentrating on the task in hand. As all tables are proving they can do this - we introduced a table trophy for the end of the week. The winner will be announced on Monday!
Thank you to all of you who have engaged with reading at home. This is a vast improvement from the following week and children are completing more quizzes in the week now and with greater accuracy! Merit cards are also building up thanks to your support with reading and homework at home.
A few reminders:
- Spelling rule for next week focuses on ‘i’ sound spelt ‘y’. Engage with spelling lists on Spelling Shed.
- Homework this week is an online task on MyMaths. Children's individual logins are in the back of their diaries.
Have a lovely weekend everyone. See you on Monday!
Friday 10th September 2021
And just like that the first full week of Year 3 is complete! The children have settled back into school life well and have adapted to the changes in routine well. I have been really impressed with their positive and mature attitude towards the rules and routines allowing all of the adults in Year 3 to feel excited about the year ahead.
This week the children have worked exceptionally hard in English and Maths. The children tried hard to apply the skills and knowledge they had learnt in Year 2 linked to word classes and place value and this supported them with their transition in skills and knowledge to the Year 3 objectives. We have had busy afternoons too. In our first History lesson we looked at timelines and even tried to draw our own - a tricky skill but one we achieved with some perseverance. In PSHE we looked at different emotions and tried to link them to different colours. In RE we shared our current understand on Christianity and in PE we focused on floor gymnastics and hockey.
A few reminders:
- Please can planners and reading books be in school every day. When you read with your child at home please sign their diary by ticking the rewards section and signing your name.
- Spelling rule for next week focuses on ‘u’ spelt ‘ou’. Engage with spelling lists on Spelling Shed.
- Homework this week is an online task on Spag.com. Children's individual logins are in the back of their diaries.
Have a lovely weekend everyone. See you on Monday!
Friday 3rd September 2021
We have all had a lovely couple of days getting to know one another today and beginning to learn the rules and routines of year 3. The children were so excited to become juniors and behaved extremely well. We are all really excited to that official start of our Year 3 adventure on Monday. Have a restful weekend everyone and we look forward to seeing you again with your beaming smiles and positive attitudes.
