Little Mermaid

  • Thursday is my non-contact planning, preparation and assessment time. Friday is my day off. In my absence Mrs. Biddles will be teaching the children in Mermaid Class.
  • Our full time teaching assistant is Mrs. Homer
  • Our Summer Term PE day is Friday

Our topic for the first half of the Summer Term is: 'Get Set Grow'. Children will be learning about different types of plants such as flowers, trees, fruits and vegetables. We will be carrying out an ongoing class experiment to find out what conditions are best to help a plant grow. We will be growing our very own bean seeds in hope they grow into a beanstalk. This links very well with our literacy story focus: Jack and the Beanstalk. Children will be learning to retell the story through 'Talk for Writing' story language and actions in order to write the story later in the term. We will also be having a very exciting visit from he ASDA community team who will be helping the children find out about different fruits and vegetables and where they come from around the world. We might even get the opportunity to taste them!

Week commencing 8th January 2018

Welcome back to the Spring Term. I’m not quite sure where the Autumn Term went! The children have settled fantastically back into school life, showing a very mature attitude to learning. They are particularly enjoying our new role play area which is a ‘sweet shop’. This was an idea completely from the children and I am proud to say having ownership of this has really encouraged them to look after the area even more so than they would normally. Well done Marvellous Mermaids! Children are also enjoying their new phonics groups and have taken to the new routine very well.

Week commencing 22nd January 2018

What a fantastic few weeks we've had in Mermaid class. I am certain the little mermaids are growing up by the week! I am particularly proud of how they have taken to our new phonics groups and are working hard. We sent our messages on a balloon on Thursday this week and the children (and teachers) thoroughly enjoyed this WOW event. We made a wish on our balloon, said our last goodbyes then finally counted down from 10 before we finally let go watching them disappear into the distance. The children were fascinated with how small they became and they travelled further and further away. It was a magical moment. Thank you to those families who have offered to come along to ESP garage with us on Wednesday 7th Feb. Mermaid class look forward to having you.

We have started a water drinking challenge this week which was led by the children. Everyday the children now see if they can drink more water than Mrs Robinson. This is most definitely encouraging more water drinking as I'm sure you have noticed many empty water bottles are coming home at the end of the day. Well done children for taking on this challenge!

Week commencing 26th February 2018

Welcome back to the second half of the Spring Term. It is so great to be back with Mermaid class after my ailments before half term. I did miss them lots and to see their smiley faces come on Monday morning was a great welcome back. I am super proud of all children for their amazing Dovedale attitude in my absence. I have heard great things! Thank you for all your well wishes and I am pleased to say I am much better.

This week in Mermaid class we have been settling back into class routines and exploring some new environments I created over the half term break. They seem to be enjoying these. They have also been very excited to use our new 'Alice in Wonderland' themed Book Cafe role play area. They have been practicing holding a teacup with their pinky out and using a posh accent which is rather funny to watch! The children have also enjoyed having fun in the snow this week and I'm sure they have enjoyed their snow day at home with you too. Finally, I hope you all received your Mummy Crafer-noon invitations. Thank you very much for your return slips. It will be great to see you there. Please can you return these as soon as possible to enable us to identify how many of you will be attending. Thanks in advance.

Week commencing 16th April 2018

I hope you had a great Easter break with your children. Last week the children really enjoyed sharing their Easter holiday news and produced some fantastic independent new writing. Thank you to all parents who attended parent evening. It was so lovely to be able to share how well your children are progressing with you. I can not quite believe we are in the Summer Term! Where has this year gone? Despite year 1 only really being around the corner, Mrs Homer and I are not quite ready to say goodbye yet. We have an exciting Summer Term ahead of us including our class assembly on Thursday 3rd May. Mermaid class and I would love you to come along and share this with us. Invites to be sent home closer to the time.
